(( To everybody who made a digital Sektor clone for Vangey's storyline a couple weeks ago - here is your prize! Original post is here. -Piece, Spackle ))

A Chunk of Misshapen Scrap

This piece of the Green Sektor Protector is a small momento of the case that dealt with a single question, emblazoned on the Paragon Times:

Target: Shinsektor?

It all began when "The Insectoid Knight", Shinsektor, suddenly vanished from Paragon City. At first, even his closest friends and confidants had no idea where he had gone. His recent behavior had led some to believe he was going to go on a rampage similar to the ones caused by Malavus and Guardius, two mental protocols implanted into his psyche.

Soon after his disappearance, news broke that two heroes (Samurai Pete and the Ocular Octo-Gaze) had died under mysterious circumstances inside the Devcon Recreation Facility, commonly referred to as The Arena. As prying eyes began to multiply, the Devcon staff worked on figuring out exactly what was responsible.

Soon, two Sonic-empowered heroes (Cher-Lock and Holmey) decided to personally investigate the facilities. It was only a few days later that they vanished, presumably also victims of the mysterious Arena murderer. Shinsektor's continued abscence, coupled with small bits of information found in the Arena's surveillance recordings, led some of the public to believe that he was responsible.

Just as mysteriously as they had begun, things suddenly quieted down in the Devcon murder case. Shinsektor's partner, Krickette, reported to the hero community that he had returned from an extended captivity in Washington state, thus giving him an alibi to lend credit to his own claims of innocence. The Arena killer seemed to have vanished.

However, for personal reasons, Shinsektor had decided to remain out of Paragon for several weeks. During this time, the Arena killer revealed itself in broad daylight. It appeared to be similar to Shinsektor in appearance, but quickly showed its villainous intentions by destroying the Insectoid Knight's underground abode.

Soon, Shinsektor returned, seeking a group of heroes to help him deal with the Arena killer for good. Heading into an Arena event to weed the insectoid lookalike out from hiding, you and the other heroes soon found yourselves trapped inside a holographic battleground, seperated from the Insectoid Knight. The Arena killer engaged you in battle, and though outnumbered, it appeared to be physically indestructable. But, with a broken transmission from Shinsektor that he had severed the killer's connection to the Arena holosystems, you and your allies defeated the insectoid murderer.

The damage to its body revealed the killer's true nature: it was a mechanical automaton! Engaging a self-destruct protocol, it detonated a small section of the Arena as you and the other heroes escaped. In the Arena lobby, its near-skeletal remains approached, only to be finally obliterated by Shinsektor himself.

The Insectoid Knight considers himself to be in your debt, and will always be ready to come to your aid as repayment for helping him deal with the final loose end of his own Resolution.

----------

You have received a Temporary Power!

Temporary Power: Summon Shinsektor

You use your commlink to call in the Insectoid Knight, Shinsektor. This hyper-regenerating Scrapper wields a bio-organic blade along with long-range Icarus Energy attacks. As his schedule is very busy, he will leave the scene after 10 minutes of inactivity. This power has 5 uses before Shinsektor will ask you exactly why you can't deal with this crap by yourself anymore.

Whoa Tex, this story shouldn't be posted to Fiction under my name. I didn't have anything to do with it except coordinating the extras for the arena fight. The author is Vangelus, the story took place on Virtue, and the full thread with all his writing in it is here.

"Hah! Too slow, eight-eyes!"

"Rrgh...at least I'm not wearing a dress!"

"This is -Japanese-!"

Samurai Pete launched another attack at The Ocular Octo-Gaze. Several minutes earlier, the two got into an argument that led them both to Devcon Recreation Centre, better known to most as "The Arena".

Octo-Gaze's octal-eyeblasts blasted Pete to the ground. The katana-wielder groaned as he was teleported to another part of the holographic terrain.

"That's one more for me, skirt-boy!"

"Oh, that's it!"

Engaging a Stealth-tech belt device, Pete's form shimmered slightly as he crept up behind his opponent. He noticed that the Stealth-tech seemed to be causing holo-graphical-glitches, but decided not to dwell on it until he filled out an Arena Feedback Form. Readying his katana, he called out.

"Did I mention I'm a ninja?! HYAAA!!"

He swang his weapon like a baseball bat, his entire body turning around with momentum. He heard something hit the ground behind his back, and snickered.

"Guess -that- taught you, huh?"

There was a small, choking silence.

"Eight-eyes?"

Pete turned around, and his grin quickly fell from his face.

"Oh god..."

Octo-Gaze was grabbing pathetically at the stump beneath his left shoulder. Bursts of crimson were discharging from the wound as he fell to his knees.

"Octo...Octo! Hang in there!"

Pete looked towards the holographic sky.

"HEY!! We need some help in here!! Where the hell were the safety protocols?!!"

The scenery flickered and skipped, as though something were moving through its code.

"Hello?! Anyone?!"

"Uugh..."

Octo-Gaze started to wobble. Samurai Pete pulled off his jacket, tying it around the remains of his opponent's arm.

"Just...just wait there, I'll find the exit..."

Pete ran towards the nearby "War Wall" boundary of the holographic terrain. He beat his fists against it.

"Open up, damn it!"

"HUUHH....HHAAAAUGH...hkkk...chk..."

Whirling around, Pete's eyes widened.

"Oct-!!...Ock....oh no..."

A bio-organic sword seemed to be hanging in mid-air. It drank deeply from the massive gash that traversed through Octo-Gaze's spine and neck. The hero lifelessly toppled into a puddle of his own blood as holographics glitched and flickered around the blade. Then, code seemed to visually re-write itself as a green, chitinous body was written into the holo-code around the sword. It yanked its sword from Octo-Gaze's body, and tilted its head at Samurai Pete.

"Y...you...the papers were right about you!! You bast-...ard..."

Pete briefly wondered how the insectoid was suddenly a few feet in front of him. It was forgotten as he then wondered why, despite landing on his back, he could still see his legs standing in place above him. As the lower half of his body fell to the side, Samurai Pete took his final breath.

"Your...swordsman...ship...is strong..."

He hacked a small speckling of blood onto the holographic grass.

"...Shin...sektor...hhh..."

The insectoid looked down at the two corpses. Then, it raised a hand, and clenched its fist. With a static hiss, its body, along with the holographic terrain, flickered out of view.

----------

The next day, in the Paragon Times...

ARENA DEATHTRAP?

Last night, two registered heroes, Octo-Gaze and Samurai Pete, were found brutally killed inside the Devcon Recreation Centre.

When questioned as to how such a homicide could have occurred inside the well-known "Arena", Devcon officials made the following statement:

"Our holo-tech's safety protocols are infallible, understand? Infallible. Those two must have shut them off, probably for some stupid machismo contest. Our techs are checking that instance's logs, so until then, I'm afraid we can't say anymore."

Longtime opponents of Devcon have cited this incident as a tragedy long-coming.

"It was only a matter of time," says Franklin Baily of Paragon Pizza Delivery. "You put enough spandex nuts in a fighting pit, and sooner or later they decide to up the odds."

The families of Octo-Gaze and Samurai Pete were not available for comment.

----------

((This is the beginning of the open part of the next Shinsektor plot. I'm making this thread seperate, so things don't get too mixed up with what's going on over in the Psyche thread.

Basically, there's something in the Arena that's shutting off safety protocols, and occasionally murdering low-level heroes inside.

This is vaguely scripted in that I have a very comprehensive scenario for the ending, which will take place both in missions and the Arena, pseudo-simultaneously (we run the missions, then run the Arena part with a different group, pretending that it's all simultaneously going on).

So if you're interested, go ahead and post in here. This is my first try at an "organized open RP" scenario, so I hope I don't do too too badly. If you aren't sure about anything, plotwise, just drop me a PM.))

"Suicide!"

"They're -both- dead."

"Double suicide?"

"Not likely, sir. Only one of them had a bladed weapon."

"Ah! Well, crime of passion followed by regretful suicide."

"...sir. We can't cover this up. I'm sorry, but we'll have to investigate this-"

"In house. In house investigation. If heroes get involved, our public approval's gonna end up floating at the bottom of a scum-lake in the Folly."

"Agreed, sir. I have already set a medium-sized team on combing over the holo-system log files."

"Any luck so far?"

"Possibly. The fluctuations were quite hard to identify, but I believe one has been found. Its pattern has been noted, and-"

"Great! Tell the press we'll have this fixed in a week."

"...sir."

"Two weeks."

A sigh.

"Yes, sir."

----------

Paper formed small, organized mountains atop a bed of further printouts.

"I don't like this. They've got us sweeping the holo-system logs, but...damn it, you saw those bodies!"

"Huh?"

"-Cleaved to pieces-, man. Even -if- something's messing with the environmental projectors, there's no way it could hone...friggin' LIGHT into something that sharp."

"...cut it out, jeez. You're not being paid to overthink this."

"No, wait, maybe he's right-"

"Yeah-"

"Shut up! Damn it, I don't need to get even -more- creeps about this place..."

An uncomfortable silence fell over the room.

"...we could try some other surveillance approaches-"

"-cameras, audios, thermals-"

"Gentlemen."

The workers all glanced at the once-closed doorway. A visibly stressed corporate man adjusted his glasses.

"In two weeks, this investigation ends. The board has decided that anything further could irrepairably damage the already-waning business of our establishment."

His finely-manicured fingers brushed a single speck of dust from his collar.

"There will be no unnecessary risks. Failure to comply will result in a review of your current employment with this facility."

Uncaring eyes glanced over a room of faces, noting that none bore names of any concern.

"Punch-out time is at 7 o'clock, sharp. There will be no overtime until this investigation has been closed."

A shadow drew over the room as the setting sun fell behind the boundaries of the wall-length window.

"Keep up the good work."

((The following transmission reaches the comm of whoever wishes to take part. Full on open-ness. Go for it.))

"Hello?"

A small bead of sweat was flicked from its perch on his eyelash.

"Hello?...oh, damn, there's no earpiece...hello, if anyone can hear me? Our deadline is almost up, and there -is- something in here. We...we found a discrepancy in the thermal scans of the video logs, but-"

He glanced at the door.

"If they find out we've been broadcasting, our jobs are in jeopardy. You need to convince him...you need to get to the board and convince them before they try and cover all this up-"

His voice dropped to a hoarse whisper as small scraping and shuffling sounds rolled over the transmission, briefly.

"They're coming to check up on our investigation...if anyone can help us...you've got to get through to the board. The thing's only killing our patrons now, but..."

With a click, the transmission ended.

((I'd reaaaally like to wrap this up within the next 7-or-so days, so full-on openness continues.))

HEROIC INVESTIGATORS VANISH, INSECT BEAST RAMPAGES?

The Sonic-yielding heroic duo, Cher-Lock and Holmey, have vanished, several days after declaring their intent of getting to the bottom of the DevCon Mystery.

"We ain't gonna drop this case, 'til we see the killer face-to-face," said Holmey, shortly before the duo began investigating the DevCon holo-systems.

According to anonymous sources, the pair had decided to enter a typical holographic battlefield mere minutes before their communicators ceased functioning.

No bodies have been found, but many assume the worst.

Through all this, the question in this reporter's mind is: "Where is Shinsektor, and why has he avoided making any official comment?" This reporter belives it will soon become obvious what the insect beast's true intentions really are.

More on this story as it occurs.

----------

"We let some capes in to look around. Are we safe now?"

"Almost, sir. Just give it a -little- more time-"

"This is costing the board a lot of money, you know."

A nod.

"I am aware of that, sir. Rest assured, this little incident will be all but forgotten within the month."

----------

A transmission echoed through the ether of Paragon's airwaves.

"I-I think...I think it knows that we saw it. We don't have long...someone, please, do something! Anything! You've got to -...oh no, no no n-"

Nobody had heard any news about the Arena scandal for over a week.

Nobody had heard from many of its employees, for that matter.

Business had begun anew. Families went to the authorities, heavy investigations dissolved into small, untrusting glances, and heroes began to physically settle their differences once again.

It waited.

Preparing Small-radius CommPulse Transmission...

Sender: Shinsektor

Transmission begins:

I'm using a short-range frequency to avoid giving any kind of warning to the thing in the arena. I've figured out a plan, but we're going to need to move out really late.

After I give a short briefing, I'll be heading in on my own to get the thing's attention. I'm the only one with access to the energy source that can destroy it, so it should stay occupied with me. I'll need the rest of you to lay down cover so someone can try and get a fix on exactly where it's hooked itself into the Arena's holosystems. Once we can take away its ability to control its own surroundings, the rest'll be a piece of cake.

Shinsektor out.

--Transmission ends.

((Of course, things never go as well as we plan, yes? *cackle*

With luck, I'll be running this at about 10pm Pacific, tonight. However, there's a big chance that I'll get waylaid by real life, so this may get postponed 'til -next- Saturday.

If it happens next Saturday, the time'll be earlier, too.

Anyway, I'll post an update on the situation sometime later tonight.

If anyone's interested, you're welcome to join in! Be it as a hero, or a dramatic extra (PM me if you're interested in that aspect of things).

Y'know...already feeling better about running this next Saturday than tonight, but I'll see how things go once I wake up.

Huge apologies for how this thread kinda tanked, by the way! I got hit with massive real-life stress, and barely was able to keep the Psyche updated, let alone this. Someday I'll try an open thingie again with better organization.))
