Sublocade is an injectable form of buprenorphine. It’s similar to Suboxone but is without the addition of naloxone. Sublocade is a brand-new medication that’s given as a monthly injection. The staff of VRP is the first in Suffolk County to administer Sublocade. It is used to treat moderate-to-severe opioid addiction in patients who have already been on Suboxone (Buprenorphine/Naloxone) and have been stable on the transmucosal formulation (pills or films) for at least seven days. Sublocade is an extended release formulation that uses the Atrigel technology to deliver buprenorphine at a controlled rate over a one-month period. As a once-per-month injection, Sublocade removes the need for patients to remember to take their daily medication, thus providing an opportunity to focus on psychosocial support, which is an important part of the treatment program.
