Amy Winehouse and Her Struggle with Substance Use

It has long been shown that professional musicians frequently suffer from substance use and addiction. In fact, there is a “27 club” in music, meaning many musicians all passed away at age 27. This includes Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, and Amy Winehouse. In 2011, there was devastating news that singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse had passed due to her longstanding substance use issues and addiction. Amy was only 27 years old, yet alcohol poisoning took her life way too soon.

Winehouse was a British singer, songwriter and musician. Her musical style was influenced by several genres of music, including soul, rhythm and blues, and jazz. Mixed into all of that were also hints of pop. Amy was inspired by music from the 1960s, as reflected in her breakthrough album Back to Black (from 2006). Her career was successful, yet ended abruptly, and way too soon. Let’s explore her struggle with addiction and substance use in more detail.

Throughout her successful, but very short career, Amy’s substance use disorder frequently gained a high level of attention from the press. In 2005, she began drinking heavily, while engaging simultaneously in drug use. As a result of this, she lost a lot of weight and looked very weak. Her family attributes her substance use during this period to the death of her grandmother.

By 2007, Winehouse’s addiction issues were beginning to negatively impact her career. During this time, she had to cancel a bunch of shows in Europe due to health issues. Hospitalizations soon followed for substances such as heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, and alcohol. Her mental health greatly suffered because of all of this, and she began engaging in self-harm as well. Winehouse also developed eating disorders.

Unfortunately, Winehouse was unable to fully overcome her substance use issues. On July 23rd 2011, Winehouse was officially pronounced dead at the scene at her home in London due to alcohol poisoning. Winehouse was only 27 years old and had a full life and career ahead of her. It is extremely sad to witness someone with such talent become gone too soon.

The key points to take away from this are that if you are suffering from addiction and substance use, it is important to seek help and recognize that you have a problem. Addiction and substance use disorder can affect anybody, and even those who seem the most successful in life in terms of financial success and their careers (as is the case with many professional musicians), often still battle substance use and addiction. Having a support system around you, as well as professional help (such as counseling services offered at Victory Recovery Partners), will help ensure that you can overcome these tough obstacles and fully recover.

On a positive note, we will always have the music from Amy Winehouse to remember her as the true talent that she was. Her songwriting and unique voice were something special. It has now been almost 15 years since she passed, and her music is still influencing both new and current artists.
