Substance use disorder is typically tougher to overcome for those who don’t have positive and supportive people in their lives. Why are there separate women's groups?
Women experiencing addictions face unique challenges and have different experiences, issues, and needs. It’s vital to address these so they can succeed with their recovery and maintain it long-term.
Women may find it harder to open up when there are men present. They might have experienced abuse from former partners, for example. For many women, only another woman can truly understand the issues they face and the problems they have to overcome.
There’s also a difference in the stigma women experience around substance use disorder resulting from their traditional roles as mothers and caregivers.
The way substance use disorder affects women is different, too. For example, physiological differences mean addiction progresses faster in women because they don’t metabolize alcohol and drugs the same way as men. Women have more fatty tissues and fewer stomach enzymes, which means they process alcohol and drugs more slowly.
