Probuphine is an implant that contains buprenorphine. Probuphine is used to treat adults who are addicted, or dependent, on opiates. Probuphine requires a minor in-office surgical procedure which involves implanting four rods into the skin of the upper arm that release a steady dose of buprenorphine over a period of six months. These rods need to be removed after six months. At that time, the patient can choose to have new rods implanted into their other arm. Probuphine is a part of a complete treatment program that also includes counseling and behavioral health services.
